Q.

baby stools

Please help. my 5 month old baby has started solids. He's been given the purity cereals (goodnight cereal) His stools have become very hard & he strains to get it out .. so much so that he screams in pain. This morning he had a motion & it was streaked with blood. He kept waking up during the night & I think it's cos his tummy was sore. What can I do to help him ? Is there anything I can give him to soften his stools & help with the constipation ?

He is really very constipated. The cereals seem to be largely responsible for this. It would be best to stop them for a while and continue breast feeding only and then after a week or two to try again on a maize or rice cereal.

Did you start with rice cereal? My baby is now 6½months old. We started her on solids 1 month ago and she also struggled with her tummy. I have since started giving her the prune purity ( first foods ) and it works like a charm. Not every day but every 2nd or 3rd day. The first mouth he will most probably pull a face but try litlle bit at a time. My daughter loves it now. Hope it works.
