Baby refuses to eat solids

My 8 month old baby refuses to eat solids. He was given solids at around 5 months and he was okay with it at that time although he used to fuss alot. Now I can' t seem to get a spoon into his mouth without him fussing and he shuts his lips tightly so I can' t really feed him. His lips will be shut even if hes hungry and only will open them when I give him his milk bottle. At 8 months milk is not enough, he is supposed to be eating a balanced meal. He is not teething as yet and I' m not sure what to do. Please help....

This is not uncommon. Try mixing a little rice cereal with his formula or sit him on your lap and try to feed him yoghurt. If he eats the yoghurt add a little pear or apple to the yoghurt next time always feeding him while he is on your lap.He may refuse food at first but will gradually start to eat more and more foods.Be very patient with him.

Hi Kim-my mother was a in the creche business for 21 years-my LO is 5 months old we actually had a chat yesterday about when she would attempt feeding herself-what you describe is definetely a sign.Just try and seat him at the table with the family at meal times and see how he will react to trying to feed himself-I might be wrong but it won`t hurt to try it.
