Q.

Baby not picking up sufficient weight

Sorry doc, i was a bit brief, but at birth he weighed 3.560kg, upon discharge he was 3.37kg. Went to the clinic on the for six week check up, (28.11.07), he weighed 4.40kg, which was fine. a month later (28.12.07) we went for his next visit at which he only weighed 4.470kg. That's when we went to the paediatrician, after trying sweet oil, +- two weeks later he shot up to 5kg, but on the 28.01.08 when we went to the clinic again for his 14 week injection he only picked up to 5.08kg. Now the paediatrician has taken a stool sample and as i said we are waiting, but we just want some info to see how serious this can be. Both my wife and i are only 1.7m and 1.6m respectively. I think every child grows at their own pace, and just so long as he is'nt losing weight, is the main thing. But then again im no doctor, so i guess we just needing the info. Thank-you so much for the help you guys offer on line.

Your son's weight for a baby of 14 weeks is slightly below the average falling on the so-called 25th percentile [the lowest 25%] for baby boys of his age. However this is not a problem at all as he is not in the categories of weight for his age where one would be really concerned. This may simply be a familial tendency as you suggest. Your baby seems very happy and is contented so there does'nt seem to be any cause for concern.
