Baby not gaining weight

Hi Doc,

My 20 months old son is not gaining weight after removing his tonsils in 14 september 2009.He is eating very well now, but he is still weighing 11 kg from 1st october until today. Before the operation he was weighing 12 kg at 18 months. His tummy is not well cause he has a runny tummy on and off he sometimes say his abdomen is painful.

He is still on breastmilk and Isomil formula but he no longer wants isomil he enjoys drinking cows milk from the cup.I stopped giving him cows milk and kids yoghurt thinking it is the cause of runny tummy but it still continuing. And also gave him vermox thinking maybe it is worms.

Went to see the doctor on the 3rd october and again on 20 october but he is not getting better. He is on full mixed diet, please Doc help.

Thanking you inadvance.

Thanks for giving me such helpful information especially about your son's weight. His weight at 18 months was above the average for his age but is now below the average. This together with his persistent diarrhoea is of concern. There are 2 possibilities at his age. The first is 'toddlers diarrhoea' which is a reaction to too much fruit juice or fruit in his diet and to the natural sugar in fruit called fructose. The other possibility is that he has developed a gluten allergy or intolerance. Gluten is found in wheat and in most cereals. You can try avoiding fruit first and see if he gets better, if not try a complete wheat-free diet. Let me know how he gets on.
