The proper name for this condition is Roseola. It is caused by a virus called Human Herpes Virus 6. It is very infectious to children under the age of 3 years who have not had the illness. Adults are usually immune to the virus. It is spread by contact, so hand washing is essential. It is not a serious illness although affected children develop a very high fever before the rash appears.
