Hi Doctor,

My baby is 14 weeks old and I'm busy weaning her off the breast and onto the bottle as I return to work in two weeks. She really didn't like the bottle at first but is starting to get a bit more used to it now. My probelm is that she is only drinking 60 - 110mls at a time and absolutely refuses to drink more. I've even tried feeding her more often, at the moment she feeds every three hours, but she won't hear of it. She was born weighing 3.115kg and weighs 5kgs now. She drinks 5 - 6 times a day. She'd been sleeping through from 6 weeks, she would have her last feed at 7pm be asleep by 8pm and only would only wake again between 5 and 6am. Since I started weaning her about a week ago she's been waking up once to twice at night again which makes me think she's not getting enough to eat in the day. I've tried switching formula and I've also tried different bottles but that's the most she'll drink. Should I be concerned? What can I do about this?

Your baby is doing reasonably well as far as her weight gain is concerned, but you are expecting too much of her to take more feed every 3 hours. This kind of schedule is making both of you tired. She obviously prefers the breast and it is such a pity that you are having to stop this. You may as well change her over to the bottle completely now if you don't intend continuing to breast feed her.Cut back on the number of feeds to 5 feeds and offer her more in the bottle. Do not give her any solids at this stage.
