Asthma & allergies

Hi Paed

Seeing that you are very informed on asthma & allergies, I would like to know from you the following. My little one is 24 weeks old, has been to two different paed's, and he still suffers from his chest. I was told to nebulize him with the prescribed meds, which really helped, but as soon as it's finished, it's like it starts all over again. We've done allergy tests on him (it was horrible!) but hey all came back clear except for a small percentage in the air he breathes in. He has definitely inherited the sinusitus from mom & dad. I was then told that I can also use saltwater/Salex solution to nebulize him with. He really coughs very bad, it is worse at night, and it wakes him up during the night. I'm currently still using a inhaler also prescribed be 2'nd paed. The pharmacist recommended I try Bisolven cough syrup, Lennons Borsdruppels etc. I have been giving this to his since Sunday, and I don't know if it might be too soon to say, but it doesn't sound any better to me. I have really spent alot of money on various meds, I even massage him with aroma therapy oils, I have tried Bennet's Easy Breathe Kit etc etc. Any sound advise here?

If he has asthma-which is not certain from your description,he is being very inadequately treated. You must take him to a paediatrician with an interest in asthma and allergies. If you let me know in which area you live, I will recommend a paediatrician.

Hi Ilse - I'm also in the Edenvale area. What your son has sounds very similar to what my son has although my son is 2 years now & only developed this during this last winter. The paed insists it's asthma related & has put my son on some medication which is definately helping.

I take him to Dr. Strachan at Bedford Gardens. He hasn't done tests on my Son yet as he doesn't think it will be beneficial at this stage as he's sure it's dust or something we can't do anything about.

I'm going to take my Son to an E.N.T in January because he's also having problems with his ears & I'm wondering if this isn't half the problem that everything is draining straight into his chest.

Try Dr Strachan - his number is 622-2771

I had asthma as a child, am now left with sinus (not so bad in JHB was worse at the coast believe it or not) and hayfever and some allergies, my husband also has mild allergies, our daughter has eczema and sometimes sinus problems. My advise as a mother, stop using the aromatheraphy etc etc, sometimes these things although natural have specific smells which can aggravate an allergic/asthmatic child especially while they sleep. Vix rubbed on my chest as a child would set my asthma off, a lot of smells did. Keep your child as natural and perfume free as possible this even goes for the products you use on his skin, his bed lines and what you use to wash that in, keep his room and house dust free, if you say he has slight allergy to what he breaths in, could be the dust or pollen so dnt open windows before 9 a.m , i am not sure how the meds from the pharmacist will help his chest, if it is allergy related then surely an antihistamine would make it better, they have good children's anti histamines- ask your paedi, maybe he might have to take some everyday for around 3 months, i did this when my daugther was 16 months (advise from the paedi of course) and really she is 100 % since then, no real allergies per se.

Just my commetns and hoping to help somehow, pls let me know what you think or if it helps, or shame maybe you do all the above and still have problems, i hope NOT!
