Dr my son has been diagnosed with asthma(23 months old), but this is on my discription of symptoms....He never wheezed. This last 3 weeks he was struggling with URI and crouplike symptoms. This past weekend while we were driving he started coughing badly!! It sounded as if something was stuck in his throat, but it was a horrible sound, he was gasping and making scrathy noices as if he wanted to get someting out of is throat. We stopped the car and I gave him one puff of Ventolin in his spacer. He emmediatly stopped coughing but just look very tired with slight blue, grey couloration around his mouth. He still gave a few loose coughs here and there during the day, but not as bad. Was this just croup or an asthma attack? Thanx

This does not sound like asthma from your description. It sounds more like recurrent croup. The only problem with this is that the Ventolin helped him when he was coughing and that would be more likely to occur with asthma. Your son should be seen by a paediatric pulmonologist so that a clear diagnosis can be made of his problem and he can be placed on the best treatment. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
