Q.

ALLERGY AND STOMACH GRAMPS

Dear Doc
My son 5 yr old IS allergic to dust mites, pollen. He was on nasonex and he had constant nose bleeds. He is currently now on deselex syrup. He gets hives on his skin. We use dust mite covers and spray and Aqua cream on his skin to prevent eczema. Now he is complaining about stomach cramps and the next thing he is vomiting crazy. This has happened before but we dont now the cause of it? He develops a cold fever afterwards. Can I use probiotics for this? I urgently await your reply. Please help. Can the allergy be causing this??? Desperate Mom

A food allergy could certainly cause this, but at 5 years of age another important thing to think about is a parasite infection. The most likely one is Giardia. So ask your doctor to test him for giardia and to treat him with Flagyl. The hives could be due to a food allergy so this must still be tested for as well.Stop the Nasonex for at least 10 days if his nose is bleeding as this aggravates the problem. It would be best if your son was seen by a paediatrician with an interest in allergies in children-there are experts in all the main centres in SA.
