The most likely cause of this complaint is a type of allergy to insect bites and in particular to sand flea bites. This results in an itchy rash. Of interest is that a single flea bite causes many itchy spots to develop. These spots can last for several weeks at a time. This rash is known as 'papular urticaria'. You can try giving your children a mild antihistamine called Allecet 5ml at night while they are in Cape Town and especially if they start with the papular urticaria rash again. Apply calamine lotion twice daily to the itchy spots.
