The mother of my 2 1/2 year old grandson is out of contact right now and has left a bottle of allecet syrup 5mg with me to use for him, but on the web all I can find is that it is an ordinary antihistamine. He often and currently has a runny nose (not green) and has had a chesty cough since birth (he was premature). The cough is good and loose right now. There has been some speculation as to whether he is asthmatic, but I see no asthma meds here. Should I give him 5ml of this syrup daily? (no package insert here). Should I give him 2 1/2 ml twice a day? I do not want to dose him unnecessarily but do not want him to get worse.

You are correct Allecet is an antihistamine which is very helpful for children who have a nasal allergy problem. It seems that your little grandson may well have nasal allergy as he has a runny nose and this does not appear to be due to an infection such as a cold. He also has signs that he may have a post nasal drip causing his cough. He would benefit from using the Allecet Syrup 5ml before bedtime.

Allecet can be given long term. Its usually suggested when a child has post nasal drip or a pretty much constant runny nose.

If your grandson has post nasal drip (coughs mainly at night or when lying down) then give 5ml at night.
If however he has runny nose all the time, then split the dose into 2.5ml in the morning and evening.

I stop givng the allecet when all the mucous clears and then start again when it comes back. My son is 6 now and we have used Allecet on and off for two or so months at a time since he was about two if I remember correctly.
