Q.

Air travel with toddler

We plan to go on a 17-hour flight to Australia with our 28- month old child. Please give advice about helpful strategies when embarking on air travel with a headstrong two-year old and advise whether or not any sedative is needed/ warranted.

I have to warn you that it will require a lot of patience. It helps to be two people who can share the burden. Sedatives do work for some people, but others cope without it. I do not personally have a strong opinion as long as the sedative is used with due caution. Taking something familiar to entertain him and allowing him to drink during take-off and landing are the only strategies I can suggest. Discuss the use of medication with your doctor/paediatrician.
