Q.

ADHD; HYPERACTIVE....?

I am at my wits end at the moment. My daughter will be 4yrs old this April. From birth she has been difficult and demanding.
When her friend/ friends come to play she does not have the same attention span as they do and runs circles around everyone literally and metaphorically she jumps on everything and cannot seem to sometimes carry out the simplest task. I thought she had a problem with her hearing as she was very sickly as a baby and had her tested this was not the case. She seems to have enough energy for five adults. She seems to be exceptionally bright and learns very quickly but can not do the simplest things like catch a ball or sit still for more than 2 minutes. She has only just started sleeping through the night but still wakes up from time to time every other night. We went through a stage were the Peadiatrician prescribed valium to try and break her habit - did not work. The only time she is quiet and sits still for 5 min is when she meets someone for the first time. Sometimes it feels like I have been hit by a hurricane and my marraige has been under some strain for some time. PLEASE HELP. We have a new baby on the way and things cannot go on like this for much longer....
I am desperate!!

We cannot always explain why children are very active and sometimes the best thing to do is to look at the positive side and encourage the things that she does do well. Children are exceptionally sensitive and it may be worthwhile to think of any stress that may contribute. A child's security is often the essentail starting point when addressing difficult behaviour. A child pscychologist may be of value to help identify possible areas that can be addressed, but I doubt if there will be any quick fix medicine.

Hi ther Leigh
I can understand your stress> I also have a very hyperactive boy his is 6 years old. He was diagnosed by a a docter with ADHD. My world broke into thousands of pieces. I got a mail from Jacqui who gave me excelent advice.(see on this page under elsabe griessel) I changed my son's diet immediately to fresh fruit and vegies. I do not give him any sodas only fresh fruit juice. If you want to give your daughter some sweets try sugarfree. Cut out sugar to the minimun . Also I bought Calmivit. It is a natural herbal calm capsul. I refuse to use Ratilin. You will not see the medicine work immediately but with the diet you might see a difference . Good luck. Elsabe
