Q.

Sore throat

Hi. My six year old daughter woke up yesterday morning with a rough voice, indicating a sore throat. She didn’t complain of pain, though. Only of phlegm in her throat, all day. At night when she fell asleep, she started with a very chesty cough. I am not sure what to treat this with. There is no blocked or stuffy nose at this point. She is on Avamys and Deselex, though. Please advise...

It sounds as if your daughter has tracheitis or laryngitis. This is usually due to a virus infection. Even though you do not think that her nose is blocked it will help her to use a saline nasal spray such as Salex twice daily. Also prepare a soothing cough mixture by adding a teaspoonful of honey to a little warm water in a glass and also add a teaspoonful of lemon juice to the mixture. Let her drink this twice daily. Also continue with her usual medicines. If she is no better after 48 hours she should be seen by a doctor.
