It is very likely that your very young baby has a viral chest infection. Rhinathiol is a medicine that is used to thin mucous and to make it easier to cough up the mucous. However it is not usually used in babies as young as 5 months and in France it is not allowed to be prescribed in children under 2 years. It does not cause drowsiness. You should not use Rhinathiol for your baby of 5 months. Keep your baby's nose clear by using FLO-Baby saline nasal spray twice daily. If he is still coughing quite a lot after another 2 days, he should be seen by a paediatrician. Many viral chest infections especially those caused by RS virus or by adenovirus can be quite severe in young babies and it would be best to see a paediatrician if he is not better by Thursday 23 May.
