Q.

Flu-like symptoms

Hi Doctor. My seven year old Daughter started with a flu, today. She had a temperature of 38.5 during the day. In the evening, She started with a chesty cough, still very flu like symptom’s. She fell asleep and woke up shivering. I checked the temperature and it was normal, not high. Went up to 37.2 still shivering. I put in a suppository, to be safe, as She did feel abit warm. Fifteen minute’s later and She is still shivering. I gave Her some Flusin syrup before bedtime, do you think that this is a side effect of it? The shivering scared me...

Very good question and you have given a good description of your daughters illness. It does sound as if your daughter has flu. It is common to get bouts of fever alternating with shivering in the early stages of flu. Your daughter’s relatively low fever is typical of this illness. The suppository you used to treat her fever brought her temperature down to virtually normal. Flusinhas an ingredient called pseudo ephedrine which typically may have the side effect of causing shivering. I prefer not giving medicines containing pseudo ephedrine to children. Rather use Panado  syrup to treat her fever if needed for your daughter
