Q.

Fever, 5-month-old

Hi Doctor. my daughter is 5 months old weighing at 8kg. Last week she had some discomfort around her right ear because her hand was always touching that area and she is uncomfortable when laying or breastfeeding. On Saturday morning had a temp of 38.9 but came down with Panado but still has fever on and off but controlling it with Pando. Yesterday she cried non stop and took her to the Emergency. Doctors checked her ear and said it was 'a little red" and her throat the same thing. They said this was a viral infection and antibiotics would not help so they told me to continue with Panado (5mls every 6 hours) and added Nurofen with this (2.5ml 3 times a day). Doctor, she doesn't seem any better, still feels warm to the touch, temp ranges now between 37-37.5 but she's crying non stop and not sleeping and also doesn't seem to want to feed. I'm not sure if she's too upset to feed or just not hungry. I don't know what to do. Emergency mentioned to give it a week but I hate seeing her in pain like this. your advice will be highly appreciated!

Your baby almost certainly has a severe infection of her right ear. She is in lots of pain and needs to be seen urgently. Please take her back to the emergency unit or preferably another one urgently. I hope that she is seen by a doctor who is experienced in examining young babies. It is absolutely essential that your daughter is seen urgently.
