Q.

Child's fingernails peeling

Hi. My son is 5 and i have noticed that his fingernails are peeling rather badly. They have moved away from the nail bed and it looks sore. There are at least 5 nails in total and this is not restricted to one hand.

This is a condition with the medical name of 'onycholysis' Look it up on Google. There are several possible causes for onycholysis in children especially taking certain antibiotics, but there are others including psoriasis, eczema and iron deficiency. This is quite a distressing and uncomfortable condition for a young child. It is important to take your son to be seen by a dermatologist ASAP. This is a difficult time of the year to get an appointment. If you cannot get an appointment very soon take your son to the nearest paediatric unit where he can be seen almost immediately.
