Autistic and epileptic 9-year-old

Hi Doctor, My son is 9 years old and autistic and epileptic. He is currently on epilium and is using 5 tablets in the morning and 5 at night. He is constant soiling his pants and it is happening at school now. I dont know how many times we have to clean him. I first thought is was maybe the tablets that is causing him to soil his pants. I suspect that he maybe cannot feel the feaces. The family doctor told us that he has low muscle tone. I actually dont know what to believe because i am losing patience with him. Please help.

Sorry about the long delay in replying to your very important question. Your son is autistic and also has epilepsy. He requires treatment on Epilim to control his epilepsy. He is now soiling himself at school which is a very big problem for him and for you. The question is, is this soiling due to a constipation problem with overflow stools leaking past constipated stools or is this soiling problem due to a psychological cause? Most soiling problems in boys of 9 years is caused by a psychological cause. The first thing you need to do is to take your son to be seen by a paediatrician so that the first possible cause, namely that of chronic constipation can be diagnosed or excluded. If your son does not have chronic constipation, the paediatrician will then advise you how to deal with a possible psychological cause.
