Q.

ADENOIDECTOMY

Hi Doctor i have a 4 year old boy with continuous nasal congestion and runny nose. he will have a cold almost every 2 weeks. we have removed his andenoids at 6 months and unfortunately it grew back. we then removed it again at 2 years old due to snoring and difficulty breathing and today it seems it has grown back. he struggles to breathe through his nose at night which results in breathing loudly through his mouth interfering with his sleep. i dont want to put him through the operation again but i also dont want him to suffer with his nose issue. he already sounds nasally when speaking. please assist doctor i dont know which way to turn anymore

In the first place it is very rare for adenoids to grow back if they are properly removed. It is also very difficult to remove adenoids in a 6 month baby, so your son’s adenoids may not have been adequately removed the first time. From your description it sounds that your son has severe and persistent nasal allergy known as allergic rhinitis. He needs to be seen urgently by a paediatric allergist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
