8 year old increased fear of the dark

My 8 year old is scared of the dark. He still sleeps with me becuase he says that even if the light is on in his room he fears that somebody can come through the window and the other rooms are still dark. It has now become so severe that he won''t go anywhere down the passage if the other rooms don''t have lights on. If we are sitting in the lounge and I go to the kitchen he will even go with me. I am a single parent and it is taking a lot of strenght and patience to deal with his fears as it often means I have to leave everything to walk with him. I have tried everything from switching on lights to talking to him why he feels scared to even telling him why he should not fear the dark. He started karate to try and help his self esteem but nothing seems to help him. He is ADD and only very recently started medication. I don''t have the resources to take him to a specialist but I really want to help him somehow. I have also concidered what I could be doing wrong or if there is something that is triggering his fear. But it is difficult as I know many things can trigger fear but I don''t know what.
Any advice would be welcome. You can even refer me to websites that might offer advice or assistance. I am really desperate to help my son.
