8 weeks old - weight issues

My son is now 8 weeks old. He was born slightly prem and only weighed 2.88kg at birth. I weighed him on Monday and he is now only 3.3kg. He eats every 3 - 4 hours but only eats about 30mls at a time. He is a contented baby and seldom cries and is alert and interactive. He is strong, and holds his head up for short periods on his own and has much strength in his legs and arms.

He is on breast milk and I' m worried that he is not picking up enough weight (what is the norm?) I know each child is different, and I wouldn' t even of been concerned had the sister at the clinic said he needs to gain more weight.

I tried to feed him every two hours, but with his colic, by the time he has burped and is comfortable, it' s almost time to feed again. To get him to eat more than 30mls takes well over an hour, and sometimes that doens' t help either - it' s like his mouth switches off at 30mls.

Should I be concerned? And is there anything else I can give him to help him wind easier? Because he really battles!

To be concerned or not to be concerned???
Tis the question...

Thank you!

The average weight or a baby of 8 weeks is 5.4kg. Even allowing for the fact that your baby started off life with his weight below the average, he should still have gained more weight by now. If he is taking about 8 feeds of 30ml each he is only getting 240ml of formula per day. His current requirements at his present weight is about 580ml to 600ml per day. There must be some problem causing him not to take sufficient formula. Perhaps the present formula is making him feel full too soon. What did the clinic sister suggest that you should do?

The sister said I should try feed him every 2 hours. The problem with that is it takes so long to burp him after a feed (now taking well over an hour to get over 30mls) that by the time he' s all done burping, he wants to sleep - then it' s time to feed again??

He' s not on formula, he' s on breastmilk. And I' m feeding him with a bottle because he swolled more air and choked on the breast. Since his mouth was too small to latch I suppose? I fed him every 2 hours on Tuesday, and yesterday he was so exhausted from not sleeping - he ate even less and slept just about ALL DAY.

He' s doing much better today, and eating much more per feed, without me forcing the issue too much.

The thing that is confusing me, is the fact that otherwise he is perfectly healthy. He has plenty wet nappies a day, is now having a stool everyday, and this morning and today 2 already. When he is awake, he' s interactive, smiling and moving his arms and legs around.

I am now at 60mls per feed without too much hassel today, I don' t want to push him to eat too much as he was only drinking 30mls for some time. He' s content and when he sleeps, he sleeps well. I don' t let him sleep over 3 hours during the day now however, and feed him exactly 3 hours apart to get more milk in that he was before.

Should I just continue this for the remainder of the week and weekend and see what he weighs on Monday, as I' m taking him back to the sister then?

If he is on breastmilk why are you feeding him out of a bottle.
