Q.

8 monhth old baby girl

My brother's little girl is 8 months old, she got sick on wednesday and was admitted to Hospital, cause she was having feaver fits. Thursday morning her heart stopped 5 times and the doctor managed to bring her back everytime. She was airlifted to Durban and she is still in ICU. She has had 3 more fits over the weekend, they did blood tests and brain scans. Luckily no brain damage was found, but they did find that she has meningitus. How dangerous is meningitus in a 8 month old baby? And how could they only realise after 4 day's that she has meningitus?

It took far too long to make the diagnosis and it is extremely lucky that no brain damage has resulted from this delay. Meningitis is always dangerous in an infant but fortunately most types can be successfully treated these days.
