6 yr in Gr 1 - not able to concentrate

Hi Doc,
My son turned 6 end september 06, he started gr 1 this year. at the parents day at the end of the first term his teacher said that he is exceptionally intelligent she would grade him at a higher level than the other kids, but he doesnt concentrate and that is keeping him back and was effecting his reading. so we started reading alot and i tried explaining to him that he needs to concentrate harder. in the second term he got a new teacher and last week i went to the school to know how he is doing. the teacher complained about the same thing that he doesnt concentrate. he does his work quickly so that he can finish and things that he could do correctly because he knows the work he does incorrectly because of his hurry. he gets up from his chair every 10 minutes and wants to go to the toilet every half hour. at home we do reading, so he will ask me what a word is, by the time he finishes reading the sentence he forgot that word and i have to tell him again. he will ask me what the same word is over and over. i dont understand. because he is exceptionally intelligent, he has shown that since he was a baby. his teacher says that if she tells a story and then at the end asks him to tell the story he will dictate it to her word for word. so i dont get it, because even at home at storytime, he will listen very attentively, but if i said to him ok, its time to do reading, he will read the worksheet a few times and ask if he can play. last year at pre-school, he was top of his class. we applied at one of the top schools for him, their application form is like applying for a loan at the bank, they then select 100 from the app forms and my son was one of them, they then do a readiness test and verbal tests and all sorts of things and from there only select 60 kids and he was one of them. when the teacher who did the test came out of the test room with him she said to me that he is very intelligent. so i dont understand. the first term teacher suggested that its his age, because most kids were turning 7 in june july and he only in september and that with time it will get better. but im concerned because if we dont do something to strenghthen his concentration and teach him to concentrate now it could pose as a major problem in the future and hinder him. i went to cna and bought some books which teach reading and how to write and a book for teachers to help kids. i first have to read and understand how they work and then try. but i just wanted your professional advice as a child specialist. IS THIS A SERIOUS PROBLEM? SHOULD I BE CONCERNED? IS IT A PROBLEM THAT MOST KIDS AT HIS AGE EXPERIENCE? WILL IT GET BETTER? WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MY SON. I WANT TO HELP MY SON.

Your problem is extremely common. In spite of his intelligence your son is still immature and his concentration is very poor. The question is;Is he just a bit emotionally immature at this stage?-or is his problem an Attention Deficit problem [ ADHD type]?I think he should be evaluated by a paediatric neurologist as soon as possible so that you know exactly where you are with him.
