6 year old soils pants daily

My six year old grandson has developed a problem within the past 6 months. He started holding back his stools and then passing a large hard stool every 4-5 days which caused discomfort and at times smool loose stools in his pants. Now he has a bowel movement twice daily but does not use the toilet. His child minder or mother asks him if he would like to go to the toilet and he says he does not need to and then will sit down on the floor to watch TV and pass a stool in his pants. We are all concerned and would like to handle the problem correctly to not cause emotional damage. He goes to school. This has also happened whilst playing at a friends home. His parents have questioned him to find out if anything is worrying him but he just apologises and then repeats the procedure again. Please help!

The most common reason for this behaviour would be a child that suffers from severe constipation. The rectum becomes so stretched and desensitized that a child is unaware of the need to go to the toilet. He is not naughty and with the correct treatment (plus a healthy diet), this can be sorted out.

Hi Granny

Go to www . kidsnews . co . za (just take out the spaces). On the left side of the page is a menu, click on "Articles". The first article is "encopresis is the soiling of the underwear with stool by children past the age of toilet training". It's very interesting and helpfull.
