Q.

5yr old not using the toilet

HI my 4yr11mnth old son has in last few months started pooing in his pants it started at school but he now even does so at home he sometimes messes his pants two or three times a day, he doesnt want to go to the loo and holds it in. he says he forgets or he doest know how to go to the toilet but he was using it fine before this all started, he also stopped wearing nappies at night for a few weeks but then started wetting the bed every night and is now back in nappies again. He is a very happy confident child and there is nothing obviously wrong at school and home is relaxed and a secure environment. I am worried that he will start getting teased about stinking, sometimes the poo is in his pants the whole day at school and i only notice when i collect him. I really dont know what to do i have tried talling to him and explaining that he needs to go to the loo as soon as he feels he needs it, i have also at times got cross with him but know that this doesnt help. What can i do?

Paediatrician

He is getting far too old for this kind of problem. If you are sure that he is happy at school then you need to make sure that he is not very constipated and the problem is due to overflow incontinence. So have him checked by his paediatrician and then go on from there according to your paediatrician's advice.
