4Yr Old not sleeping

Hi Doc

I am very worried about my son. For the past few months I have been struggling to get him to sleep at night. He has a set routine at night and normally has eaten and have been bathed by 6:30. From 8 o' clock the struggle begins. I take him to bed but he wont sleep in his room. He wants to sleep with me and hubby and eventually at about 10 we cave in and let him lay with us hoping he' ll sleep. The problem is that he still stays awake for another hour after this. After he falls asleep I take him to his own bed but an hour or so later he would be right back in our bed again. This is killing me as I have to wake up at 5 and most night only get about 5hrs sleep. Am I doing something wrong that I can change or is there perhaps something bothering him that he doesnt want to sleep? I have tried Natura drops for anxiety and insomnia and it doesnt put him to sleep. Please help, I dont want to be moody with my son but am very frustrated as this happens every night.

Something is obviously worrying your son as he is feeling very insecure at present. Is he being bullied at school or is he unhappy there? There must be something that need sto be sorted out. In the meantime tired as you and and his dad may be you need to be very understanding and supportive of your son but stop at letting him sleep in your bed as this will become a habit which will take ages to sort out. Read to him at bedtime. Keep the stories calm and interesting and often he will fall asleep while you are reading.Find out from his teacher if there are any problems at school.
