Q.

4 year old biting

Hi Doctor, so my 4 year old boy is biting on the front of his tops an this is a concern for me. his front of his top is completely wet and his teacher has mentioned this to me on numerous occassions, she also mentioned that there are other kids doing it as well so im not sure if its a habit that he picked up but he doesnt do it much at home. i have been researching and found that this could be a sign of anxiety or stress but he has been in daycare since 4 months old so im not sure if it could be anxiety? he has had problems with congestion in the nose since he was a baby and has had 2 adenoidectomys done but to no avail they have grown back. im not sure if this could be bothering him or if i should rather take him to a specialist? he is a very wild boy and gets along with most kids so i dont know what to think anymore. your advice would be highly appreciated.

This is a good question with all the necessary information. Your son’s habit about biting on his shirts is probably just that,a habit. He seems to have picked this habit up at school by copying the other children at the school. Like all habits the more that you mention it, the more it carries on. Your son does not appear to be an anxious boy at all. This habit will just stop with time and especially when his attention is not drawn to it so often.

It is important to get his nose to be clear. It would be most unusual for his adenoids to grow back twice. It is more likely that he has an a nasal allergy causing him to have a blocked nose. This requires diagnosis and treatment and I would strongly recommend that your son is seen by a paediatric allergist about his blocked nose. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
