3yr old &  eye styes

Dear doc,
I know that eye styes are common amongst children, however, this seems to be a recurring problem with my 3 year old son. He suffers with eye styes at least on a bi-monthly basis and in fact at the moment has 2 on one eyelid. He does not appear to be in any pain and does not seem to rub his eye all that much. Even under normal circumstances he does not rub his eyes which leads me to wonder what''s causing this? Is there anything specific we can do to help prevent further infections?

This is an important question. It is probable that your son has a problem called 'blepharitis' which is an infection of the bases of the eyelashes on the eyelids. The usual cause is a bacteria called staph. This can be a very chronic and difficult problem to treat.Cleaning the eyelids with a baby shampoo is usualy very successful. Thanks for the advice Mom &  Doc. We have strict lid hygiene regiment but will start using the shampoo as indicated. Hope this works. Thanks again!

If it seems to be reoccurring at the same spot it is not a sty and will need to be removed by your ophthalmologist - very small operation. The reoccurring of this " sty"  at the same spot causes this " pimple"  sack to become Tough in the inside - the ophthalmologist will scrape out this tough sack and clean out the " sty" .
