This can be simply an enlarged breast which is very common in newborn infants and is due to the mother's hormones during pregnancy. The swelling will disappear by itself with time, usually after about 4 weeks.

I happened to see this thread while looking for something else, and I am a bit concerned. I have experience in Paediatric Oncology(children with cancer) and I think this lump should be checked out, if only to reassure everyone that there is nothing to be concerned about. If you get a referral from your GP, you can be seen at the Johannesburg Hospital Paeds Oncology ward within a day or two. Care for children under 6 is free.

It' s very difficult to diagnose something like this or say whether it' s something to worry about or not, without seeing the child. So, rather get it checked out by the experts.
