2-year old not taking meds

Dear doc, my 2 year old tends to have a very low immune system. She was admitted to hospital approximately 1 month ago and is sick again. She has been given antibiotics again but the problem is that when giving it to her, she gags and makes herself sick and obviously all comes out. My husband and I give it to her little by little via syringe but still she gags and makes herself sick. Do you have any advice how to get the meds in because if she does not, she will have to go to hospital again and quite frankly, I cannot afford it any more. I have also tried giving the meds to her via yogurt, breakfast, she just refuses. Please help....

This is a common problem and you have tried most of the 'tricks' already without much success.Always ask your doctor to prescribe once daily medicines if she needs an antibiotic. There are such antibiotics available for children and they taste better than most as well. Sometimes the medicine can be prescribed in tablet form or as granules which can be crushed and then added to a spoonful of jam or honey.

I can tell you one thing, if she doesn''t want it she is not going to take it. I''ve tried everything with my 2 and a half year old, and nothing works. I''ve given up now, and if she ends up in hospital that must happen, because there is not a way that we can get the medicine down her throat (and let it stay there). I wish they could give the medicine as injections, because she doesn''t mind that at all.

My experience that works wonders, is bribery.....

Tell her if she drinks her meds, she will get two sweets, mini marchmallows, or something like that....
I put it down so my little one can see it, the give it to her in syringe, then I alse make it big fuss of what a big girl she is, and hand her the sweets quickly!

Good luck!
