Childhood Diseases

2 1/2 year old

Hi Doc,

We are a bit concerned about my son. He has terrible mood swings, and gets extremely frustrated and angry over little things. Everybody says it could be the terrible two''s but I am not sure.

When he was around 12 months old he started banging his head when he had tantrums, this has stopped recently, where he only now does this once in a while. Late last year we were not happy about this so we took him to our Pead, he assurred us that a child will not bang there head too hard that it will hurt him. As a precaution he did an eeg for us, which came back clear of any medical condition.

Currently He will get upset about something and go into a terrible rage and scream and cry. This can go on for up to an hour sometimes. And even happen 2-3 times a day and then not happen for a day or two. Once we calm him down, he will be as happy as can be. Its just not normal for me to go from extreme happiness to sadness and back again. This is really making it hard for us to take him anywhere or to actually get him to do anything.

Somebody told me that we should try Omega 3 supplements as it helps if there are chemical imbalances in the brain. Another person told me it could be stress caused by hormonal imbalances and we should go see a homeopath.

Please give us some guidence.

Thanks doc

p.s. sorry for the essay

You have set your question out very well. It is difficult to be sure about your son without being able to see him. Many children go through a period of having temper tantrums at this age and this can be quite normal and is a passing stage. These episodes do not usually occur so regularly and are not as frequent as they seem to be with your son.His episodes also appear to be more like anger episodes than the usual temper tantrums.Head banging which he did earlier is either an attention seeking habit or a soothing habit that some children use when they are falling asleep. While this may all be normal behaviour and may be appropriate for his age group, anger episodes may be the first signs of ADD or ADHD and can also occur in children with bipolar disorder. You can certainly try to give him Omega 3 which may help him.It would be best to take him to see a child psychologist for an opinion.
