18month old had febrile convulsions

My 18 month old son had a febrile convulsion on Thursday due to a high fever. Doctor diagnosed a chest and ear infection as the cause. His fever was normal when it happened because we had been trying to bring it down all night, we thought that he was teething or possibly that it was the effects of an MMR vaccination that caused the temperature to go up, so we didnt act on it by going to hospital, just gave him panado and cooled him down with lukewarm cloth.

Is there any way we could have picked up any symptoms prior to the convulsion happening? My son was fine that evening, before his temperature went up later that evening, he seemed ok, just had a slight temperature and playing and running around. We did notice him fidgeting with his tongue quite a few times, showing us something but when we checked there was nothing. Could it be that his tongue went numb or felt strange and could that have been a sign that it was about to happen? He was also mumbling quite a bit in his sleep, this when his temperature started to rise. Are these all signs we should have acted on? Because I feel horrible that it happened, like I could have prevented it.

Febrile convulsions are very common indeed in children under 3 years. The usual cause is an ear infection which causes a high fever [around 39 degrees] Now that you know that your son has this problem future episodes of high fever must be dealt with immediately by giving him Panado syrup early and cooling him down by damp sponging if necessary. He will grow out of this tendency with time. It is very difficult to pick up any signs that a child is going to have febrile convulsion especially if it is the first one so there is absolutely no need to feel guilty.
