18 month old baby not sleeping at night

Hi, I have a 18 month old son. He wakes up for 2 to 3 hours every night. He had colic the first 11 weeks, then he started sleeping through the night, no problems. When he was 12 weeks old we were involved in a car accident. He ended up with a fractured color bone, hihatus hernia and navel hernia. He had repeated ear infections because of the fluids flowing back to his ears due to the hernia. He got grommits at 5 months. There after he just never slept through a nite because of the discomfort and pain. They told me to wait until a year passed for the body to heal itself. The navel hernia did heal, his ears are fine now. I just don''t understand why every night he will wake up and stay awake for 2 to 3 hours. I have tried giving him pain medication for teething, but does not realy help. I have not tried the CIO method, because when he cries, he stops breathing and go''s blue in the face until he breathes again. You have to tell him to breathe and blow in his face to get him to breathe again. I took hom to the paediatrisian for his checkup and according to the dr everything is fine. I am so tired of not sleeping for 18 months, I get about 2 - 3 hours of sleep. He only take a nap for 2 hours at school. He is a good eater and takes enough fluid during the day. I need advice on how to get him to sleep again.

It is always difficult when children of this age are in the habit of waking for long periods at night and also it is difficult to change.Your son has certainly been through a lot in his first year. When you tried the controlled crying method he started having typical breath holding attacks which are very scary for parents. The controlled crying method is the usual method recommended to stop this regular waking pattern The thing to remember with these breath holding attacks is he will always start breathing again by himself even though you get an enormous fright when you see him turn blue.
Have you tried Rescue Remedy for your son at night. This may help him to sleep through or sleep for a longer time before he wakes up? I am not happy about recommending any other sedative or even Melatonin for an 18 month baby
This kind of sleep pattern often comes right when children are about 2 years old and hopefully this will be the case with your son as well.
