15 month old with red sore toe

Dear Paed

Yesterday when I picked my 15 month old son up from daycare he was a very unhappy little chap. Didn''t want to walk. When I took his shoe (soft Shoo-Shoo) off it looked as though the second last toe on his right foot was folded over the toe next to it. It was very sore. Gave him Nurofen and put a bit of Voltaren gel on the toe. It was soon better and he was walking and playing again. This morning the toe is bright red, and there seems to be a small bump, almost like a little blister on the top of the toe, where it joins the little toe. Its a bit sensitive, but not very sore. What could it be and how do I treat it?

I am not sure about the cause of your son's problem. Is it possible that he injured his toe at the daycare? Another possibility is that he has an infection of this toe. I would not like to advise about treating his toe without knowing the cause. If his toe is still swollen and painful tomorrow you should take him to see a doctor.
