Q.

10 month old sick and not eating well.

Hi doctor. My 10 month old daughter caught a cold from her sister, started being off last Wednesday, by Friday we were struggling to keep her fever down and she was not drinking or eating at all. We took her to our GP on Saturday and the GP said her chest sounds very bad and she also has an ear infection, she prescribed an antibiotic, aspelone and empaped. She seemed to have improved but then started refusing her bottle again Sunday evening and we ended up going back to the GP on Monday (terrified of her dehydrating!), we saw a different doctor and he said that her chest sounds clear and only the one ear is a bit red, just keep giving the medicine and she will drink when she feels like it... She is doing much better currently, much more energetic, no fever at all, only still having the occasional coughing fit; but she is still outright refusing solids, refuses pretty much every second bottle and will only drink 80-100ml formula per bottle. She only drank 380ml formula total yesterday. Is it normal for her to still be taking in so little now, I'm really concerned.

Your baby daughter has had a bad cold with an infection of her chest, probably bronchiolitis. This is almost certainly a virus infection. Antibiotics will not help and may make things worse by killing the good bacteria in your baby's intestines. Babies will not drink properly when they have a blocked nose, so clear her nose using FLO-Baby saline nasal spray twice daily. Also give her a probiotic such as Reuterina for babies for 10 days. This will help to restore the good bacteria in her intestines. This infection will gradually settle down although she may cough for up to 3 weeks.
