Q.

Kneecap moving

A couple of weeks ago I had a slight fall & although I didn't land on knee, it got kind of stretched & bent. Am now having horrible feeling when walking. My knee starts seizing & it feels like my kneecap is rising up towards thigh. I have to stop, massage & bend knee for a bit before walking again. It happens almost all the time now especially if I a walking fast. I am only now becoming aware of a slight dull ache but only at night in bed. What could this be & what should I be doing to sort it out. Should I wear a knee guard & should it be the open or closed patella kind? Do not want to have an op!!! Thank you

Hi Kathy,

Persistent knee pain after trauma can be concerning. It sounds like you may have either injured the ligaments involved in stabilising the knee cap, or possibly had damage to structures within the knee, for example the cartilage or a meniscus. If the knee is/was swollen, and you are finding it difficult to weight-bear, it may be a more severe injury, despite a relatively 'light fall'. A knee brace is helpful in terms of stability and pain control, but if there is structural damage, it may not be sufficient. It's advised to have the knee thoroughly examined by an orthopaedic surgeon or sports physician, so that a diagnosis can be made, and a knee rehab program planned.
