Fracture of the sternum

A fracture of the sternum results from a high-impact blow to the chest. In an impact where a fracture to the sternum occurs, injury to the surrounding ribs as well as possible contusion to the underlying cardiac muscle are also possible. A recent example of a rugby player who has suffered a fracture of the sternum is Craig Davidson.

Symptoms
There is usually a point of tenderness over the sternum at the site of the fracture. This pain or tenderness is exacerbated by deep inspiration or forceful expiration. One must also keep an eye open for signs of a weak, rapid pulse as this could indicate more severe internal injury.

Time out of action
Time out from physical activity is usually dependent on the severity of the injury. Return is usually dependent on the symptoms or rather the lack of them. Care needs to be taken, however, as the underlying organs may have been hurt in the initial injury and the risk of re-injury will always be a factor. – (Conrad Booysen, Biokineticist)
