Q.

Sleeping disorder

My son is 20 years old. He doesn't have a problem sleeping but, when he falls asleep he starts fighting and talking as if he is awake. He always has a fight with somebody and talks very loud. One would think he is awake. He sometimes hits his girl while sleeping. A lot of aggression coming out. He will fall asleep at say 12h00 and then start talking for about two hours after falling asleep. What can we give him or how can we help him.

Apologies for the delay in responding but my emails got diverted and I didn't know. This problem can either be due to a variant of sleep walking or a REM behaviour disorder. If it is sleep walking then often a mild sedative can help while there is specific treatment for REM behaviour disorder. Either way a visit to a sleep specialist will help a great deal as a correct diagnosis can be made.
