Melatonin usually has an effect within a few days but it is important to have the correct sleep pattern as well. Make sure you are not spending long hours in bed trying to sleep. Rather go to bed much later than you are currently doing - at least 1 1/2 hours later. If you cannot sleep then rather get up and do something - lying in bed is very destructive to your sleep habits.
