Fluticasone propionate is the active ingredient of Flixonase aqueous nasal
spray (Nappi code: 787795-003), Flixonase nasules (Nappi code: 878758-003) and
Flomist aqueous nasal spray (Nappi code: 704383-001).
Fluticasone propionate is an intranasal corticosteroid. Intranasal
corticosteroids are steroid medicines that are formulated for use as a nasal
spray to decrease inflammation in the nasal passages. Symptoms of allergic
rhinitis such as a runny, itchy or blocked nose, and sneezing, are a result of
inflammation in the nasal passages.
In South Africa fluticasone propionate is registered for the treatment and
the prevention of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including hay fever,
and small-to-medium nasal polyps and associated symptoms of nasal
High doses of this medicine for prolonged periods of time may increase
systemic absorption, which may lead to various adverse effects. Systemic effects
are however unlikely at the recommended dose.
Note that this nasal spray will not relieve the symptoms of nasal allergies
immediately - it may take several days of treatment to achieve its maximum
benefit. To achieve its full effect, the spray should be used regularly
throughout the allergic period to keep the nasal inflammation under control.

Interactions are unlikely when this medication is used as directed.
