How do I get rid of back hair?

If you start shaving your back the hair will only grow back faster and coarser right? Wrong. This is a popular myth, it actually only feels that way as within twelve hours stubble starts appearing. But if you let the hair grow out, it will become as smooth as your original back hair.

The best short-term option when it comes to removing back hair, is to wax it off. Whereas shaving will leave you hair-free for about three days, waxing will leave your back smooth for over a month. Do not wax though if you have an acne breakout on your back.

Back hair can be very embarrassing, especially in the South African climate where men like to parade around without shirts on. Shaving your back is very similar to shaving your chest, only you might want to ask someone to shave your back for you as it’s a bit trickier.

  • Take a long, warm bath or shower.
  • While your back is still warm, apply shaving cream and leave it on for a few minutes before shaving so that the hair softens.
  • Make sure that you use a very sharp blade. You might have to use two blades to shave such a large area.
  • Do not shave over the same area more than twice to reduce skin irritation. On the first stroke shave with the grain and on the second stroke, go against the grain for a smoother shave.
  • When you have finished shaving clean the area with clean warm water and soap to get rid of all shaving debris that could cause infection.
  • Do NOT use an aftershave containing alcohol, rather opt for a special moisturising aftershave or moisturiser.
  • Don’t shave your back too often. By giving your skin a break you will reduce your chance of skin irritations.
  • Do not use hair removal cream on your back.
