If you're concerned about your baby's hearing, the Children's Hospital in Richmond, USA, offers this checklist of typical behaviour:
Birth to 6 months:
- Startles to loud sounds.
- Calms and turns to your voice.
- Wakes up to a sudden noise.
6 to 12 months:
- Responds to his or her name.
- Enjoys toys that make noise.
- Understands no and bye-bye.
12 to 18 months:
- Enjoys music.
- Uses at least 10 words.
1.5 to 2 years:
- Combines words into phrases.
- Follows simple directions.
- Recognises names of family members.
3 to 5 years:
- Enjoys songs and books.
- Speech can be understood by parents and friends.
- Can use both ears on the telephone.
