Q.

Sudden onset hearing loss

Good Day.

Please bare with me while I give the history of my condition first.

My hearing loss occured about 2.5 "hears" ago :).
It was strange. I just woke up one morning and I no longer had hearing in my left ear.

I was subsequently diagnosed with Sudden onset hearing loss, and was Prescribed cortisone in quite high dosages for about a week, with no result.

The next step was to put me in hospital for about 4 days on a drip, which I believe contained a substance called reomacrodex. This too had no effect, and nothing further has been done.

Since the day my hearing loss occurred, I've also been experiencing a constant sound, which I believe is called tinnitus, and every now and again, I get a few popping sounds, which gives me hope that I may one day regain my hearing.

Ok, now the question, do you know of any other procedures or substances that could be tried in order to solve this problem, other than what has already been attempted?

As I'm sure you're well aware, the doctors believe this condition was caused by mumps or some similar illness I had as a child.

I would also like to try get a second oppinion, could you please also recommend a specialist in the Jhb area?

Whew, thats about it.
Thank you.

Dear SayAgain

The best you can do at this point is to go and have a proper evaluation done on your hearing and find out exactly what your options are. i would gladly refer you to someone so please e-mail me your detail and where in Joburg it would be most convenient for you. (izabelle@widex.co.za). The audiologist will be able to determine exactly where the damage is and will be able to further refer you if necessary.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon

Kind Regards
Izabelle Pieterse
