Q.

Son 8yrs tonsils, ear infection

Hi, My son has had problems with tonsils since 1yrs old (he is 8yrs old now). 2 Days ago my GP said that he has the flu and tonsilitis as well as middle ear infection and should go for grommets. This is freaking me out because my son can't hear me now, I have to shout in order for him to hear what I am saying. I don't have money for expensive doctors and I am not on medical aid. I need to know if there is any home remedies I can use in order to maybe help him clear the infection in his ear (left). My son is allergic to penicillin and this makes it difficult for the antibiotics to wrk on him. I live in Grassy Park, Cape Town. I NEED HELP.

Dear Tgirl

The grommets are a minor procedure and work really well for children with recurring middle ear infection. Discuss your concerns with the doctor but usually when grommets are recommended, there are no better solutions for the problem. Maybe ask the doctor if he can recommend a public hospital where it can be done. The important thing though is to get those ears cleared up, he is loosing information, especially at school that is extremely important for his development and learning
