Repeated infections - what to do

Hi there

My little boy is now 4 years of age and has had repeated infections, about a year and a half ago I took him to an ENT who showed there was lots of fluid behind the ear and booked him in for Grommets. These lasted 6 months and then fell out, he kept on getting stuffy noses and becoming impossible a sure sign his ears were acting up.

Took him back to the ENT who said that again there was lots of fluid behind the ear drums and that his hearing was into the minuses so he inserted titanium grommets in Feb.

After that had nore problems with constant runny nose and sinues draining diwn his throat, took him to the GP and after 3/4 times he suggested going back to the ENT. ENT said that the grommets were not working - the ear had rejected the one and the other was gumped up, nothing could drain as the grommet was full of (for want of a better word) snot.

By now there was infection so he took LO back into surgery, removed the grommet, did a sinus clean and took blood to check for allergies. Nothing came up on the allergy tests and LO is again moaning about his ears etc - where to from here.

I cant keep on putting my son on anti biotics and have no idea what the next step is, I feel so helpless as i dont feel that even the ENT can tell me what exactly is happening and how do I prevent future infections - my LO always seems to be sick...

Please advise.

Dear Sam

Please accept my apologies for my late reply - i have been away on business.

It sounds to me like you have been doing all the right things. I would have advised you to do exactly what you have done: See your GP, see an ENT, follow-up, have grommets, do allergy testing. I can understand your frustrations. It is however important to get to the root of the problem and it might be advisable to get a second opinion. Try to see someone that specifically specializes in allergies. If you don't know of someone in your area, please write to me and i will see what i can find out for you, so that we can find the right direction for you to take.

Good luck and please let me know if you have any further questions. You can write to me at izabelle@widex.co.za.
