Individuals who are exposed to excessive amounts of noise (artillery noise, machinery noise etc.) are at a greater risk of developing a noise induced hearing loss than those who are not exposed to noise. However, there are many other factors which come into play such as genetics and age, which can also predispose someone to developing hearing loss. I can't say that hearing loss is more prevalent in military veterans, especially since I don't work with any specifically from the United States, however any person who is exposed to excessive noise over a long period is more likely to develop hearing loss than those not exposed to noise.
