Hearing management

Question

Q.

Hard hearing

I was born with the disability and it was only discovered when I was about 3 years old. Since then I attended a special school for the hearing impaired and attended a normal academic high school. I got my first hearing aid at the age of 5 and with the help of the hearing aid I managed to lead a rather normal life.
After school I finished my degree at technikon and today I am a happy man. Just one problem.
After technikon when I started to work in a rather noisy environment resulting in me not wanting to use my hearing aids any more.
It is about 7 years now and I just want to know if there is any operation to help me because I am very self concious of people seeing me with hearing aids

Dear Lee

I understand your situation and there is a lot of people with similar circumstances. There is a lot of information that i can give you. The first is; there is a lot of new technology available in hearing aids that came into the market over the last 8 years. Digital technology are able to do processing of sound. Noise reduction, specific amplification, feedback management and compression for comfort under most circumstances are just a few of the possibilities.

There are also operations that can help under very specific circumstances. The best advice i can give you is to go and see your Audiologist, retest your hearing and look at all your current options. Then make a decision on what is best for your lifestyle and needs.
