Q.

Grommets at 35

Hi Doc
I am 35 and went to have grommets put in my ears 2 days ago as I have difficulty flying with my ears. The ENT did the procedure in his rooms under local anaethestic. While doing the left ear, I moved my head and the grommet fell into the middle ear...to cut a long story short, I got extreme vertigo and began vomitting, was put into ICU and have just returned home from my ordeal. I went for a hearing test yesterday which shows my hearing is lower than what it should be in the left ear. The grommet in the right ear is in and okay, the left grommet was removed after I became sick. I am in a situation now where I can hardly hear out of my left ear and have tinnitus sounds. Its so uncomfortable!!! Do you know how long this will take to heal? Will it heal? Is there a chance the eardrum wont heal? My ears feel totally blocked, do you think its safe to take a sudafed to see if it helps this blocked feeling?
Do you think I should put cotton wool in my ears to prevent infection in the mean time? I am so worried!!!
Thanks for your time

Dear Hearing

I can understand why you are worried. Discuss all these concerns with your ENT and i would recommend that you take only medication that he/she prescribes. I am not sure of the extend of the damage but it is possible for an eardrum to heal. Keep a close eye on any symptoms that you might be developing, go for a follow-up visit with your ENT and then when everything medical has been taken care of, then have your hearing evaluated by an audiologist. If you don't know of someone in your area, write to me at izabelle@widex.co.za and i will gladly refer you.

Please let me know if you need any further information

Kind regards
