Q.

Friend is deaf

Hi,

I have a friend who is impaired in one ear,we have to speak loudly for him to hear.He can hear high pitch, women speaking softly for instance, but not low pitches. The amazing thing is that he is very good in identifying tone, even in a loud, noisy environment - He could for instance identify poor sound in a nightclub.

He has been to see numerous doctors - they have all failed to help him.He has not been able to make use of hearing aid,it was never any good for him. Please help,I know we are missing something!!!

Hi Virgil,

You do not mention what doctors your friend has visited. It is a very difficult situation. A good ENT specialist and Audiologist would be able to give you the best advise.

If he tried the hearing aid a couple of years ago the technology had definitely improved since then also there are also new advances in assisstive devises.

If you need some names of docters and audiologists in your area please mail me the area you stay or check the forum on the previous questions i gave numbers of Johannesburg specialists.

PLease contact me if you have any further questions.

regards

Hi Chantel,

Thank you for your reply.

He visited numerous doctors over a long period and he has not tried the latest technology.

I heard about a South African Doctor (a lady) fron Camps bay/Sea Point who won an international award for her work with the hearing impaired.

If you know who I am referring to,please provide her details.

Thank You ever so much.

Yours Sincerely

Virgil McGee
